How to Cut a Hole in Glass Tile

Glass tile can be used in mosaics and other craft and decorating projects, even if it needs to be cut to fit the design. Since it is brittle, you need to be careful and follow proper techniques when cutting a hole in glass tile. The proper tools are necessary to avoid shattering the glass and possibly causing injury to yourself. The process is simple if you use the right tools and follow the right procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Clamp your glass tile to a sturdy work surface to keep it from shifting while you drill. Mark the surface of the tile where you want your hole to be.

    • 2

Build a dam around where you will be drilling on the tile with putty. Make it at least 2 inches high, but not so high that you will have difficulty seeing what you are doing. Pour 1/2 to 1 inch of water into the dam you built. Glass tile must be lubricated with water while you are drilling, to prevent it from heating up too quickly and shattering.

    • 3

Place the glass coring bit onto your drill. Place the drill where you want the hole to be, holding it perpendicular to the tile. Drill at low speed until you have drilled through the tile.

    • 4

Drain the water off the tile and remove the putty. If the hole has rough edges, you can gently sand them with sandpaper.

Tips & Warnings

  • For smaller holes, use a glass bit instead of the larger coring bit.

  • Wear protective goggles in case the tile shatters while drilling.
