Leather cord can be attractive and versatile for stringing beads. It can also be hard to attach findings and finish. Here is a simple way to finish a leather necklace using a clasp and crimp ends.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 Crimp ends (2 for the necklace & 2 as backups)
  • 1 Clasp
  • Glue such as Super Glue
  • Jump rings (optional)
  • Chain nosed pliers
  1. Step 1
Lobster clasp (top right) Ring and toggle clasp (bottom left)

Choose a clasp that works with your design. Clasps, crimp ends all fall into the category of "findings". Jewelry making suppliers and bead stores have a findings section you can browse.

  2. Step 2
    Tube crimp end

Choose a crimp end with loops. Some crimp ends are tubes and some have tabs. Use whichever is easiest for you.

  3. Step 3

Depending on the type of clasp and crimp ends you choose, you may need to also purchase jump rings.

  4. Step 4

Attach crimp ends to leather cord.
If using a tube crimp end:
Add a drop of glue to one end of the leather cord and insert into the tube. Crimp or squeeze the tube using chain nosed pliers.

If using a crimp end with tabs:
Apply a drop of glue to one end of the cord. Place the cord into the crimp end. Using pliers, crimp the tabs down one at a time like the flaps on a cardboard box.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Step 4 on the other end of the necklace.

  6. Step 6

Wipe away any excess glue according to manufacturer's instructions.

  7. Step 7

Connect the crimp ends to the clasp. Open any clasp loops or jump rings using the pliers. Hook the open loops or jump rings on one side of the necklace together and squeeze closed. Repeat on the unfinished end.

  8. Step 8

    Allow glue to set.

  9. Step 9

Hit the town. You have a new creation to show off!

Tips & Warnings
  • If the necklace is to be a gift - consider if the person will have trouble opening the clasp you've chosen. For example, not all children can work a lobster clasp. If this is the case, consider a bar and ring toggle.
  • Make sure all the loops and jump rings will hook together and be able to move without crunching. If one jump ring is too big it may not fit with the other findings. This can cause your clasp and necklace to kink.
