How to Crochet a Granny Square

One of my favorite items to crochet are granny squares. This is also a great way to use scraps of left over yarn. I am currently making a baby afghan out of the squares. To make the afghan I am using baby yarn and a size G crochet hook.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Size G crochet hook
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1
    Round 1
    Round 1

    Chain 5 and join with a slip stitch to make a circle. Chain 3 and make 2 double crochet in the circle. Chain 3 and 3 double crochet in circle 3 times and join with a slip stitch.

  2. Step 2
    Round 2
    Round 2

    Join the next color in a chain 3 space. Chain 3 and make 2 double crochet, chain 3 and make 3 double crochet all in the same space. Chain 1. In the next chain 3 space, make 3 double crochet, chain 3 and 3 double crochet. Repeat in the remaining chain 3 spaces. Chain 1 and join to the top of the beginning chain 3.

    Join the next color in a chain 3 corner space. Chain 3, 2 double crochet, chain 3 and 3 double crochet all in the same space. Chain 3 and make 3 double crochet in chain 1 space and chain 1. In the next chain 3 corner space make 3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet and chain 1. Repeat 3 double crochet, chain 3, 3 double crochet, 1 chain in each corner space and 3 double crochet chain one in each chain 1 space. End with chain 1 and join to the top of the beginning chain 3.

    Round 4

    Add next color in a corner space - chain 3, 2 double crochet, chain 3 and 3 double crochet in corner space. Chain 1. 3 double crochet chain 1 in chain 1 space. In remaining corner spaces - 3 double crochet, 3 chain 3 double crochet, chain 1. In remaining chain one spaces - 3 double crochet, chain 1. Join to top of the beginning chain 3.

  5. Step 5
    Round 5
    Round 5

    If you wish to add more rounds to your squares, continue the pattern in round 4 adding one more 3 double crochet group on sides of each round.

Tips & Warnings
  • Granny squares can be made with different types of yarn. Be sure to use similar weights of yarn in each project.
