How to Remove Mold From a Car

Mold thrives on dark and damp conditions and can be a very persistent problem once it gets into your car upholstery or floor carpeting. You can remove the floor mats from the vehicle, if they're carpeted, and remove the mold from them. It's highly unlikely that you would have mold problems on any surfaces that are not upholstered, so rubberized floor mats, for example, are probably safe.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the source of the mold. Odds are good that it's in the car upholstery or possibly in the carpet flooring. Use your nose to sniff it out. Other clues include damp spots and discolorations in the carpeting or upholstery.

    • 2

Open the car doors and let it sit in a well-ventilated area until any damp spots dry out. Mold thrives on dampness, so this step is crucial to killing it. Make sure to turn off your dome light so that it doesn't stay on due to the open doors and drain your battery.

    • 3

Apply a solution of one part vinegar and one part hot water to the moldy areas with a clean rag. Scrub vigorously so that the vinegar solution permeates the fibers of the upholstery, then blot dry. Wait until the area has completely dried. This gives the vinegar smell time to evaporate as well--and sniff for any sign of mold smell.

    • 4

Reapply the vinegar solution if any mold smell is present. Scrub, blot, and let dry again.

    • 5

Install a new air filter in your vehicle, just in case the old one has absorbed any mold particles.

Tips & Warnings

  • If vinegar isn't available, you can use a bleach or peroxide solution to kill the mold.
