Avatars are the most popular way to identify yourself on the internet through message boards, forums, and using instant messages. They can be created to make a laugh, show yourself or just for a general purpose. If you want to make your own avatar or one for somebody else, you can do this easily with Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new file. Wait for the "New File" pop-up window to appear so you can manually set your settings. Avatars come in different shapes and sizes, but the most commonly used size is 84 pixels by 84 pixels.

  2. Step 2

Type in 84 pixels by 84 pixels and make sure that you are on pixels and not another measurement setting like inches.

  3. Step 3

Use the paintbrush tool to create the avatar design. Other tools that you can use to create the avatar are the "Text" tool, "Fill" tool, or the "Custom Shapes" tool. Play around with your designs and use the "History" window to remove any mistakes you may have made.

  4. Step 4

Use the "Navigator" tool in order to zoom in on the avatar and make it easier to edit. Click on the "Arrow" and drag it to the right in order to zoom close.

  5. Step 5

Turn a picture into an avatar by opening it in Photoshop. In order to do this, go to "File" and "Open". Choose the picture you want as an avatar and press "OK".

  6. Step 6

Click on "Image" and then "Image Size". Change the top pixel size to 84. The other size may not equal 84 but that is ok for the avatar creation. Press "OK".

  7. Step 7

Save the new image avatar as a new file so that the original file is not ruined. Save all avatar images as either a GIF or JPEG for the best quality, file size and compatibility with forums and message boards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check with the website that you want an avatar to find the actual size that they use. You may want to adjust to their settings so that your avatar creation is not warped on their website.
