How to File Taxes With No Income

How to File Taxes With No Income thumbnail
There are several reasons to file taxes even if you have no income.

If you did not have any income for the tax year, you probably do not have to file your taxes. However, you can file your taxes if you had no income, and a lot of people do. For instance, students who have no income have to file taxes each year to qualify for financial aid at college. If you need to file your taxes and have no income to report for the tax year, it is a simple process.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pick your form. You will need to use either Form 1040EZ or Form 1040A to file your federal income taxes. Form 1040EZ can be used only by single or joint filers who have no dependents. If you have dependents, use Form 1040A. You can get either form from the IRS website.

    • 2

Complete your personal details. At the top of the form, you will need to enter your name, address and Social Security number. If you are filing a joint return, you will need to enter your spouse's name and Social Security number as well.

    • 3

Input your filing status and exemptions. If you are using Form 1040A, select your filing status, such as head of household, and give the details for any exemptions. The exemptions section is where you list your dependents. Form 1040EZ does not have either of these sections.

    • 4

Enter "0" for income on line 6 of Form 1040EZ and line 15 of Form 1040A.

    • 5

Complete the lower sections. On Form 1040EZ, fill out the "payments and tax" section if it applies to you. If not, you can enter "0" for those items. On Form 1040A, enter any information regarding deductions, such as student loan interest, to get the adjusted gross income total, and complete the "tax, credits and payments" section. You can enter "0" for lines that do not apply to you.

Sign, date and mail the completed form to the address on the form or use the free e-file service on the IRS website to send your form electronically. To do this, you will need to transfer over the info from your paper form to the e-file site. The e-file site will prompt you to fill in the appropriate fields and allow you to do an electronic signature.
