Various errors commonly occur after using an Xbox 360 for prolonged periods of time. If not properly cared for the disc drive can become damaged, the system will overheat and electronic issues can occur. If the system is already past its warranty date, simply opening the console and cleaning it can sometimes help keep the Xbox 360 console running properly.

        Unplug any power cords, video cables and memory cards from the Xbox 360 console.

        Remove the hard drive and faceplate from the console. The faceplate can be removed by pressing gently against either the top or bottom of the system on the edges of the faceplate.

        Side of the Xbox 360. Inserting a screw driver into the first set of holes will release the top and bottom.

        Insert a small screwdriver or hard, thin object into the holes on the sides of the Xbox 360 console. Pressing in the holes will allow the protective pieces of plastic on the top and bottom of the system to be removed.

        Turn the Xbox 360 console onto its side and find the seven holes located on the back of the system. Pressing gently into the holes will release the back cover. It will open like a clam shell.

        Lift up on the the four latches on the front of the Xbox 360 console. This will allow the bottom of the consoles shell to be removed.

        Unscrew all of the screws from the newly revealed area. This will require a small and large screw bit.

        Remove the other side of the Xbox 360 console's shell. The system is now open and can be cleaned out with an air-can duster.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Make sure the system has been off for at least 10 minutes before opening it. This will prevent from the metal being extremely hot and possibly causing burns.

    • Do not rip the console open when first removing the outer shell of the Xbox 360. Ensure the latches on the front are removed first.
