Using proper table setting techniques is not as common these days as dinner parties are becoming more casual. However, if you are called upon to set a proper table, you will find that there is a specific place for everything. Basic table setting etiquette doesn't have to feel out of your reach as long as you keep a few basic steps in mind. Before long, laying out a table properly will be second nature.   • Dinner plate
  • Bread plate
  • Water glass
  • Wine glass
  • Fork
  • Knife
  • Butter knife

      Place the dinner plate directly in front of the diner's chair 3 to 4 inches from the edge of the table. Picture the dinner plate as a clock in order to help you correctly place the rest of the dining implements.

      Place the bread plate 3 to 4 inches from the top left of the dinner plate (11 o'clock position). The bread plate should have a small butter knife lying across it.

      Place the water glass 3 to 4 inches from the top right edge of the dinner plate (one o'clock position). If you wish to include a wine glass as well, it will sit next to the water glass on the outside position.

      The folded napkin (folded edge on the inside facing the plate) and the fork should be 2 to 3 inches from the left edge of the plate (nine o'clock position). The fork should be on the inside.

      Place the knife, blade side in, 2 to 3 inches from the right edge of the dinner plate (three o'clock position). Place the spoon 1 to 2 inches from the knife on the outside position.
