Things You'll Need:
- Graduation certificate from school
- Application and exam fees
- State license
-
Step 1
You must graduate from an accredited school that teaches physical therapy courses in order to take the exam to become a licensed professional.
-
Step 2
For information on applying for a physical therapy license, contact the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners through its website (see Resources), by phone at (512) 305-6900 or by mail: TBOTE, 333 Guadalupe, Suite 2-510, Austin, TX 78701-3942.
-
Step 3
You need to submit your name and address information, Social Security number and driver license information, proof of your professional degree with the name of the school, and information about licenses in other states, if applicable.
-
Step 4
You are required to pass the board's open-book jurisprudence exam on acts and rules before completing the application process. The exam can be taken online.
-
Step 5
You must also register for the national licensure examination required by the state. A passing grade on this test will make you eligible for a state license.
-
Step 6
Fees required from the board of examiners include $120 for a regular license, $70 for a temporary license and $25 if you have to retake the exam. Fees must be provided during the application process.
-
Step 7
The exam fee for national licensure is $350 for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. After you have completed the exam, your score will be reported to the Texas board. A passing grade will get you a state license and you can begin practicing as a physical therapist.
-
Step 8
If you are taking the national exam for the first time, you may be eligible for a temporary license. The temporary license will not be issued until the application process is complete. Some physical therapists choose a temporary license to better prepare them for the job while waiting to take the exam.
