How to Paint Concrete Blocks

A fresh coat of paint can liven up dingy concrete, whether the concrete blocks are part of makeshift bookcases or a garden wall. Like most surfaces, for a quick and easy color change you can simply dust off the concrete and apply a good latex or acrylic paint. This is suitable if you just need or want a temporary fix and intend to paint over it again later.
For a more permanent solution, however, there are some things you must do to make sure that paint sticks well to the concrete blocks and lasts longer without fading or chipping. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Paint Concrete Blocks

    • 1

Brush off the concrete block with a stiff bristled paint brush. Follow this by scrubbing the surfaces with a slightly abrasive soapy sponge soaked in water. You should remove as much dirt as possible to create the ideal surface for painting. Use a towel to wipe excess moisture off the concrete and then allow it to air dry.

    • 2

Apply concrete sealer (block filler) to the concrete with a paint brush or roller, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Allow to dry completely.

    • 3

Paint concrete surfaces with a roller brush or paint brush. Use long strokes to apply paint as evenly as possible. Allow this layer to dry completely--humidity and type of paint used will determine how long this takes, but plan on the drying time to take about a day.

    • 4

Add another layer of paint to all surfaces. Allow this to dry and then you can add another layer for more vibrant color if necessary.

    • 5

Apply sealer to the dried, painted surfaces. This will further protect the paint from fading and chipping.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a large area to paint, such as concrete block walls, try cleaning them with a pressure washer instead of a sponge first. If painting a single block rather than a wall, paint all exposed sides and let dry for at least a day before turning it to paint the other side.

  • Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area when using paints and sealers--both expel fumes that can be harmful to your health.
