Things You'll Need:
- White matte finish paint
- Paint brushes and rollers
- Two photography studio lights and light stands
- Camera
- Tripod
- Thick white curtains
- Curtain rods
- Screws
- Sheet (optional)
- Tacks
- Masking Tape
-
Step 1
Choose a room. The room should be long enough for you to have your camera 12 feet away from the back wall and have your lighting equally as far away. The room should have high ceilings, at least 10 feet.
-
Step 2
Paint the room white. Use a matte finish paint. White non-reflective walls will interfere the least with the light used in the shot and will not change or influence the color of your pictures.
-
Step 3
Block off all outside sources of light. Sunlight streaming in through windows gives you less control over the lighting of your shot. Put up curtain rods and use heavy white curtains to block off the windows.
-
Step 4
Choose a wall to be your backdrop. The wall should be plain with no windows or visible outlets. If there are no flat plain walls that you can use in the room can tack up a white sheet across a wall to serve as the backdrop.
-
Step 5
Set up your camera opposite the backdrop. The camera should be 12 feet from your backdrop.
-
Step 6
Adjust your tripod to your desired height. Different heights will give your subject a slightly different look so you'll want to experiment with height to get the look you want.
-
Step 7
Set one of your lights up beside your camera. Adjust the light so that it's high and aimed down on your subject.
-
Step 8
Set the second light up on the other side of your camera. Aim the second light a bit higher then the first so that it goes just over the subjects head.
-
Step 9
Play around with light and camera positions to get different looks to your picture. You don't want it to be too shadowy or too bright. You don't want double shadows either.
-
Step 10
Mark the spot where the lights are on the floor with masking tape, once you find a light position you like. That way you won't have to guess in the future.
