The domain is the heart and essence of your website and should sum up everything that your site has to offer in one or two words Therefore, a good domain name should be well thought out and planned. It is important to decide what kind of extensions the domain should end in before registering one. After buying your domain name, setting it up is just as easy. This is important for anyone who has just bought a domain and wants to know how to set it up.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Domain name
  • Web hosting
  1. Step 1

Create an account at any of the popular domain name sites, such as Go Daddy, Name Boy or Register (see Resources). You must have an account in order to register for a domain.

  2. Step 2

Type in the desired domain name. Choose to have the domain end in .com, .org, .biz or any other extension. Click the search button. If the domain name is available, it will state which extensions it is available for. If the domain is popular, then it will let you know if it is already taken.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the domain name. Choose how long you want to have it activated for, or if you want to include other features, such as web hosting.

  4. Step 4

Wait a few days. It will take some time for the domain to get processed. Check your domain name manager in the site that you registered with to see if it has finished processing.

  5. Step 5

Log into your domain manager and find the server names labeled as dns. If you are hosting with the same company you purchased the domain with, they will not need to be changed. If you set up a hosting account with another company, it will have emailed you the dns names. If not, contact your hosting provider and request the server names. Replace the existing dns names with the ones from your hosting company.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to renew your domain so it does not expire.
