The most important doors on a house are the exterior doors. To get the best in security, as well as insulation against the weather, a steel door is recommended. Before hanging a steel door, check the area around the existing jamb to be certain that the doors can simply be swapped out. The screws from the hinges and the deadbolt should be able to go through the doorjamb and into the studs in the wall.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steel entryway door
  • Variable speed drill
  • Phillips head screw tip
  • 3-inch deck screws
  • 7/8-inch paddle bit
  1. Step 1

Remove the old entry door by backing out the screws from the bottom hinge first and working your way up. Set the old door aside.

  2. Step 2

Set the new door in place and line up the bottom hinge in the pre-existing hinge recess in the jamb. Insert one of the 3-inch screws into one of the screw holes but do not screw it in all the way.

  3. Step 3

Line up the second hinge and insert one 3-inch screw into a preexisting screw hole. Do not screw it in all the way. Repeat this for the last hinge.

  4. Step 4

Check the door for alignment by noticing how well the hinges from the steel door match the recesses for the old door hinges. If they are a match, insert the rest of the screws for the steel door hinges. It is not necessary to install 3-inch screws into all the screw holes as long as one or two are installed for each hinge.

  5. Step 5

Close the door to be certain the doorknob and deadbolt are going to match the old door. If not, it may be necessary to drill new holes for the striker plate of the knob as well as the deadbolt. Drill new holes with the 7/8-inch paddle bit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses when drilling holes in lumber. Place a block of wood or something similar under the bottom of the door to help hold it up while installing the hinges to the jamb. For the best finish, prime the door with a primer suitable for steel doors before painting.
  • Do not leave power tools unattended in the presence of children. Do not paint the inside of the exterior door in an unventilated area.
