These sugar cookies aren't only delicious, they are quick and simple to bake too. The brown sugar adds a distinct flavor and color to this sweet cookie. Things You'll Need

  • Small sauce pan
  • Flat baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ cup colored sugar

      Preheat the oven to a temperature of 350 degrees F. Line a flat cookie sheet with parchment paper. This will help make removing cookies from the pan easier.

      Put the butter in a small sauce pan and turn the burner on medium high. Let the butter melt completely. Then, continue to let it cook until the butter has a brown appearance. Take off the burner and let cool.

      Pack the brown sugar into a 2 cup measuring cup or into 2-1 cup measuring cups. Dump into a large bowl and pour the cooled, melted butter over the brown sugar. Use an electric mixer to blend the butter and brown sugar together.

      Add the egg and vanilla extract to the brown sugar mixture and cream together. Next, combine the flour, salt and baking powder in a small bowl and use a spoon to mix together. Add small amounts of the flour to the brown sugar mixture, stirring after each addition until all the flour is completely incorporated.

      Get a small bowl and put the colored sugar in it. This is to roll the cookie balls in for decoration. You can also just use white granulated sugar for this step.

      Take the cookie dough and roll into 2 inch balls. Roll the balls into the bowl of colored sugar, coating entirely. Place each ball on the parchment lined cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Either use your fingers or the bottom of a glass to flatten the cookie balls slightly.

      Place the brown sugar cookies in the oven and let bake for 14 minutes. Take them out even if the top is cracked open in places and they look a little raw. Let sit about 5 minutes to cool off and then eat them.
