How to Design Your Own Emerald Ring

Shopping for the perfect emerald ring can be both fun and frustrating. There are many emerald rings available, but when you have a specific idea in mind, it is hard to find a perfect match. You can design your own emerald ring, and take it to a jeweler to create for your wedding, anniversary or birthday.

1. 

   Brainstorm some creative ideas for your emerald ring. Use paper and pencil to draw some designs for your ring. Draw both the top view and the side views to get an idea of how wide and tall you want your ring to be. Do not worry about the specific details at this stage, just explore all the possibilities for your emerald ring.

2. 

   Consider how large you want your emerald to be. You can have either one large stone or a group of smaller emeralds. As the size of the emerald gemstones increases, so does the price. A larger ring can overwhelm smaller hands or grow heavy to wear on a daily basis. You can also use different stones to accent the emerald, such as diamonds or rubies.

3. 

   Choose the shape or "cut" of your emerald. Certain cuts are more expensive than others. The emerald has its own special cut, called the "emerald cut," which is a rectangular stone that shows off the beauty of an emerald. Other cuts to consider are princess cut, marquise cut and pear cut.

4. 

   Decide on a setting style. The setting of your emerald ring supports your emerald and encircles your finger. You can choose a simple band design or embellish it with intricate designs. You can choose any jewelry metal for your ring, including sterling silver, yellow or white gold, platinum or a mixture of these metals.

   Choose which finger you would like to wear your emerald ring on, and have the ring sized to ensure a snug yet comfortable fit. It should not be so loose that it will fall off easily, or so tight that it is uncomfortable.

6. Take your plans to a local jeweler to have your custom emerald ring made into a reality.
