How to Design a Spa Bathroom

A spa bathroom is defined by the relaxing elements it contains. The room serves to soothe your senses and restore your spirit while maintaining its functionality. A unified, minimalist approach is necessary, so your first step to creating a spa atmosphere is to remove clutter. Put things away in drawers and cupboards and use attractive baskets to store things that you use every day. Eliminate distractions like telephones. It's best to design a spa bathroom with these basic elements.

1. 

   Install a jetted spa tub. The most common design is a corner unit with a deck but designer free-standing tubs are available and create a custom look. Consider a heated tub.

2. 

   Have a separate walk-in shower put in. These elegant enclosures add a decorator's touch to a spa bathroom and have rain shower heads and body jets.

3. Paint the walls and trim neutral, soothing colors like cream, pale blue or green. Avoid prints and stripes. Use complementary colors or light wood on the vanity and other furniture in the bath.

4. 

   Use marble or engineered hardwood on the floors. If you wish, you can have radiant heating installed under it. Put washable wool rugs next to the tub and in front of the sink.

5. Leave the windows plain if possible. Don't hang curtains or install shades. If you must use curtains for privacy, consider having skylights mounted in the ceiling.

   Purchase towel warmers for next to the tub. Buy high quality towels and wash cloths in complementary colors.

7. 

   Use adjustable lighting in the bathroom. Dimmed lights can create a relaxed atmosphere. Place candles in nooks or floating shelves. Introduce aromatherapy with scented oils.

8. Splurge on a high-quality bathrobe and slippers. Buy an extra set for guests who might use your spa bathroom.

9. Consider high-end amenities like a fireplace, a flat panel television and a sound system if you're creating your spa bathroom from scratch.
