Promoting growth in relaxed African American hair requires vigilant care and technique, because relaxed hair is prone to damage. Split ends, breakage, and deterioration of the roots are common among those who chemically process their hair. Moisture, along with proper trimming and conditioning, can restore the hair and promote growth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Strengthening conditioner
  • Hair scrunchie
  • Scissors
  • Coconut or Jojoba oil
  1. Step 1

Deep-condition the hair with a strengthening conditioner. Leave the hair wet, and gently massage the scalp. This will strengthen the hair follicle and smooth out any relaxed hair that is rough. Well-conditioned hair grows more quickly than poorly conditioned hair.

  2. Step 2

Secure the hair in a scrunchie, and let it dry completely. You want the hair completely dry for trimming. Relaxed hair that is left loose when wet is more prone to breakage, thus stunting hair growth.

  3. Step 3

Take the hair out of the scrunchie, and gather a 1-inch wide strip of hair. Hold the hair between your index finger and middle finger and look for split ends. Your fingers should be pointed toward the sky for an even angle to cut on.

  4. Step 4

Place the scissors parallel with your fingers. The tip of the scissors should be pointed toward the sky. Cut 1/4 inch of hair from that section. Repeat with every section until the entire head is completed. When hair is evenly trimmed, split ends are less frequent, which makes growing hair easier.

  5. Step 5

Apply coconut or jojoba oil to the hair. The oil should evenly coat the hair ends and reach up to the roots--but not the scalp. The oil will enrich the hair, promoting growth and shine. Oil should be applied no more than once per week. Style your hair as desired.
