DSL is a form of broadband Internet service that runs over local phone lines. DSL service can provide very quick broadband service to many people, but its speed is limited, based on your distance from certain phone company equipment. If you can get DSL service, you can probably get it for a low monthly price, and setting up the connection by yourself is easy.

Set up service with a company. There are probably a few dozen companies that provide DSL service, but they all have to lease your local phone company's lines. Start by looking at the DSL service your local phone company provides. It may offer cheaper and more reliable service. Thelist.com provides lists of ISPs, and you can filter by type, including DSL.

Use the DSL provider software. When you set up service with a DSL provider, it will usually provide a CD with software on setting up the service. The CD will step you through the proper order of the following steps, including setting up your account with password information. If the company does not provide software, then you will still follow the next steps, and it will provide further information on setting up your username and password to connect to the service.

Install DSL filters. DSL filters should be provided by the service company. The filters connect into a phone jack, and then you connect your phone line into the other end. You will need to put these filters on every phone line except the one where you will set up the DSL modem.

Set up the DSL modem. Put the modem near your computer and a phone line, and plug the modem's power cord in. Use a phone cable to connect the DSL from the phone jack to the DSL modem.

Most DSL modems have the ability to connect with a USB or a network cable. Network cable is faster and more reliable but requires that you have a network card inside the computer. Connect the cable to the DSL modem and then connect the network cable to your network card or USB cable to a USB port on your computer.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can get DSL service without buying phone service.

    • Check with your company to see if you qualify for DSL service and to find out what speed you can expect.
