How to Repair Windows XP on a Laptop

When your PC laptop stops functioning properly, you may need to repair the Windows XP operating system. Repairing Windows XP on your laptop will mean reinstalling certain system files that could have been corrupted due to viruses or other software malfunctions. You should always back up your data onto an external hard drive before repairing Windows XP.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC laptop running Windows XP
  • Windows XP installation CD
  1. Step 1

    Insert the Windows XP Installation CD into the CD drive of your laptop.

  2. Step 2

    Restart the laptop and then press any key to boot up to the CD.

  3. Step 3

    Press the "Enter" key after the Windows XP disk loads all of the installation files.

  4. Step 4

    Press the "F8" key when you see the the Windows license agreement screen.

  5. Step 5

    Select the installation of Windows XP that you want to repair using the up and down arrows.

  6. Step 6

    Press the "R" key to begin repairing the Windows XP installation. The repairing process could take up to 1 hour to complete. When it finishes, the system will restart and you can eject the Windows XP CD.
