Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Domain name
- HTML editor
-
Step 1
Choose and register a domain name for your web site. Consider the main topic of your site and what words people would use to search for the content on your site when you're buying a domain. For example, a domain like blue-heeler-dogs.com is better optimized for search engines than henrys-heelers.com
-
Step 2
Do keyword research to determine category topics and page titles. Using free services such as Wordtracker's free keyword tool, find the most-searched keyword phrases related to your topic. Create a list of these keywords, which you can refer to as you build a web site online.
-
Step 3
Create a content layout plan based on your keyword research. Designate categories based on popular keywords that make logical subtopics for your site. So for a site titled Blue Heeler Dogs, logical categories might be Blue Heeler Puppies, care of; Blue Heeler Dogs and Training Blue Heelers. Under each of those categories you should name 5-20 topic pages built around specific keyword phrases.
-
Step 4
Purchase and download an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver or the free alternative, Kompozer. An HTML editor is necessary for creating and editing the pages for your web site.
-
Step 5
Write your site's main landing page and other content pages, adding the images, graphics, links, advertisement code and other elements as you go.
-
Step 6
Set up an ftp client for transferring page files from your computer to the website. FileZilla is a free ftp solution and very simple to install and set up. Login to your website through the ftp and upload your completed web site pages to the correct directory on your site.
-
Step 7
View and test your web site to make sure your content is all displaying correctly and the internal and external links are all working.
