How to Get a Non-Profit Tax ID Number

Status as a non-profit enables a group or individual to apply for grants, be exempt from most taxes and have protection from personal liability. For tax purposes, a non-profit must have an employer identification number. Though there is no actual non-profit tax ID number, when a non-profit files using its employer identification number and its tax-exempt status, the group is eligible for a tax exemption.

      Determine if you qualify as a non-profit. If your company is a charity, religious, scientific or educational organization you may qualify. These types of groups may include homeless shelters, childcare centers, hospitals, artists and schools.

      In order to be a non-profit, your organization must have 501(c) (3) status. If your organization does not have 501(c) (3), you will need to file articles of incorporation in your state. You can usually find a lawyer who will help you obtain 501(c) (3) status at a reduced rate.

      Complete IRS form SS-4, "Application for Employer Identification Number" to get a federal employer identification number, EIN. Allow up to 10 weeks for your application to be processed.

      When filing your taxes, use your employer identification number along with the 501(c) (3) status to qualify for tax-exempt status.
