When changing the height of a floor by installing tile or carpet, it may be necessary to trim the bottom of a door. This will allow the door to open and close freely without dragging across the new flooring. While it's possible to do this project by yourself, it will be easier if you enlist the help of a partner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Circular saw Safety glasses Ear protection Straight edge 2 clamps Tape measure 2 saw horses
  1. Step 1

Remove the door from its frame and lay it flat on a pair of saw horses. Determine how much the door must be cut to open and close freely.

  2. Step 2

Measure the door from the top and mark the new height on both edges of the bottom end of the door.

  3. Step 3
    Rigid Circular Saw

Use a straight edge to draw a straight line through both marks. Cut along the line with a circular saw. Have a helper hold the door in place so it doesn't slide around.

  4. Step 4

Rehang the door in its frame. Open and close the door to test the new clearance height.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses and earplugs when cutting a door.
