1
Acquire a black sweat suit or other thick black clothing (long sleeved shirt and pants). The clothes should be slightly large--you've never seen a firefighter in a tight uniform. Lay the clothes out onto a large table.
-
2
Cut sections of yellow duct tape in several different lengths. The duct tape will be wrapped around various parts of the clothing. Although the arrangement is up to you, try a couple of bands on the arms and some horizontal stripes on the body. Cuffs should be covered as well.

3
Place at least one band around the legs at the knee and one on the top of the boots. Often firefighters have double bands separated only by a narrow black line. Experiment with different combinations until you have a satisfactory design.

4
Attach other decorations, such as a United States or other national flag, to the costume. You can either obtain and sew a patch flag onto the shoulder, or simply cut out a paper printout of a flag and attach it with fabric glue.

5
Purchase a cheap fireman's helmet at any costume store. Put on the yellow collared shirt underneath your dark suit of clothing. Pull the collar up over the dark shirt so that you have a yellow collar against a dark background. Wear dark gloves and paint your face with smudges of dark makeup to represent soot.

Tips & Warnings
Carry a red tipped axe with you, or if this is too dangerous, cut the outline of an axe out of cardboard and paint the tip red.
Always be cautious dressing children in heavy or hot costumes for extended periods of time.
