How to Become a PGA Teacher

Becoming a PGA professional is an exciting career opportunity for the avid golfer. While playing golf professionally is a dream for many golfers, it is a reality for a limited few. Becoming a teaching professional allows a golf enthusiast a more realistic opportunity to make a career in the golf industry. Teaching professionals are accredited by the PGA and may specialize in teaching, equipment or management.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a job working with a PGA teaching professional. This may be working as an assistant club professional, working in management at a club or working with a PGA pro who specializes in equipment.

    • 2

Register as a student PGA member. This may be done by contacting the PGA, and the professional you work with should be able to help with this process.

    • 3

Enter into the PGA's apprentice program, a 3-year certification program that includes study in myriad subjects, including the Rules of Golf, equipment making, management, public relations, event management and the like. This is a home-study course and all required subjects must be completed and passed within 3 years.

    • 4

Attend the training program. The first part of the certification program is a week-long resident training program during which the aspiring professional takes classes, is interviewed by PGA staff and is required to take and pass two exams---one written and one on the golf course.

    • 5

Pass your comp. At the conclusion of the 3-year certification program, the aspiring professional must pass a comprehensive exam, covering topics including golf club management, equipment, repair and ability to teach. Once the certification and exam are completed, the aspiring professional may apply for PGA membership.
