If you are planning a long-term stay in Japan, having a bank account makes things much easier. A bank account is required to get a landline or cell phone. Checks are rarely used in Japan so a bank account makes it easier to pay bills and receive wages.

      Make sure you qualify to open a bank account in Japan. To open an account you will need to be residing in Japan for at least 90 days.

      Decide on the bank you want to open your account with. If you are not proficient in Japanese, you may want to consider a larger bank where some of the tellers are likely to be fluent in English. Some to consider are Citibank Japan, Mizuho, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Sumitomo Mitsui.

      Different banks require different identification. Check to see what the bank you are planning to open your account with requires. You may need a visa, alien identification form and passport.

      Go to the bank and get the proper forms. Most Japanese banks are open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will have application forms in both Japanese and English.
