Improving gas mileage in a full-size truck can be challenging. Full-size trucks are not bought because of their good gas mileage. They are useful for hauling, pulling, carrying loads and carrying cargo and getting good gas mileage doesn't usually fit into those scenarios. But there are a few things you can do to improve gas mileage in a full-size truck to start seeing the benefits at the pump.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cold air intake system
  • Free-flow exhaust system
  • Computer programmer/chip
  1. Step 1

Install a cold air intake system on your full-size truck to improve both gas mileage and horsepower. A cold air intake replaces the factory air intake system, causing cooler air to be forced into the engine. This helps cool the hot engine, resulting in a more efficient running engine, which helps on gas mileage. Almost anyone can install a cold air intake system on their truck with few tools. These kits come with everything you need, including diagrams and pictures.

  2. Step 2

Add a free-flow exhaust system to your full-size truck and get added horsepower, better sound and increased gas mileage. A free-flow exhaust system consists of a muffler and tailpipe that are less restricting than the factory system. Mufflers and tailpipes should be welded into place by a professional. An exhaust shop can do all of this for under $100.

  3. Step 3

Using a computer chip in your truck can be costly, but can yield the highest gas mileage improvement possible in a full-size truck. Chips can be bought at many places online for a few hundred dollars. You can pick the exact chip for your truck, already programed to improve gas mileage. All you need to do is plug it into your truck's computer and drive.
