How to Replace a Water Inlet Valve on a Dishwasher

If you have less water or no water in the dishwasher than normal when running a cycle, this is an indicator that your dishwasher inlet valve is no longer working. Consider changing this yourself rather then calling the repair man. In less than an hour you can complete this repair for your dishwasher. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Pliers
  • Flat end screwdriver
  • Phillips end screwdriver
  • Teflon pipe thread tape

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher. Turn off the electricity to the dishwasher at the breaker.

      Pull out your dishwasher and unscrew the water supply hose to the dishwasher. Unscrew slowly to release water pressure, have a rag nearby to absorb the water. This water supply hose is screwed onto the inlet valve, you will notice another hose directly behind it.

      Unscrew the hose that is directly behind the water inlet valve by using your pliers and turning counterclockwise.

      Take a note drawing the wire colors and positions on the inlet valve. Remove the wire.

      Unscrew the intake valve using your screwdriver. Usually there will be one screw holding it on a bracket.

      Apply Teflon pipe thread tape to both sides of the new inlet valve and screw it onto the bracket using your screwdriver.

      Push back on the wire ends following your notes to proper wire colors and positions.

      Screw on both hoses to the inlet valve and tighten with your pliers by turning clockwise.

      Test for leaks by running a cycle.

  • Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher and electricity at the breaker box.
