Constantly using dye kits and bleach to lighten your hair can result in damaged, dried-out locks that literally look like they've been fried. Sometimes it's best to rely on Mother Nature to give your hair a beautiful blonde shine without the risk of damage. There are a number of natural ways to turn your hair blonde without dye. Chamomile herbs and fresh-squeezed lemon juice are just two herbal and organic remedies that will naturally lighten your hair without ever applying any harsh chemicals or bleaches.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Henna powder
  • Chamomile herbs
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Soak your hair in freshly squeezed lemon juice to turn it blonde without dye. Make sure every strand is saturated with the lemon juice, then sit outside under the sun for about 30 minutes (wear sunblock to protect your skin). Lemon acid has powerful hair lightening properties amplified by the sun's rays. Apply this treatment about once a week for best results.

  2. Step 2

Rinse your hair with chamomile-infused water to turn it blonde. You will need dried chamomile herbs and about 1 cup of water. Place the herbs in a strainer over a glass jar or plastic bowl. Boil the water and pour over the strainer containing the chamomile herbs. Strain the chamomile herbs then place them in the warm water mixture for about 30 minutes. Take out the herbs, and rinse your hair with the chamomile-infused water. Chamomile is often used to lighten hair and bring out its natural highlights. If you rinse your hair a few times a week with this infusion, you will notice your hair getting lighter and lighter over time. Exposing your hair to sunlight will make it turn blonde even more quickly.

  3. Step 3

Use henna powder to turn your hair blonde. Henna is a powerful herbal remedy used for centuries to change one's hair color, and it's a great way to turn dark hair blonde. Make sure you choose beige or yellow henna powder, which can be purchased at a local organic foods store. Mix in a few teaspoons of the powder with about 2 tbsp. of the chamomile-infused water from Step 2. You may also use regular warm water, but the chamomile will have an additional blonding effect on your hair. Stir the powder and water until you have a thick paste. Apply all over your hair, coating every strand. Cover hair with a plastic cap. Leave the henna paste in your hair for about 2 hours, then rinse out.

  4. Step 4

Use a combination of lemon and chamomile to turn your hair blonde without dye. Combine freshly squeezed lemon juice from one lemon with 2 tbsp. of chamomile herbs (or you can use two chamomile teabags) to create a potent hair lightening rinse. This will work best on light brown and dirty blonde hair. Boil some water and steep the chamomile herbs for about 5 to 10 minutes. Squeeze all the juice from the lemon into an empty plastic water bottle, and set aside. Pour the chamomile-infused water into the plastic bottle over the lemon juice. Cap the bottle and shake vigorously to blend the chamomile and lemon juice. In the shower or bath, apply all over damp hair and let set for about 10 to 15 minutes. The longer you leave it in, the blonder your hair will become.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wait for the chamomile infusion to cool before applying to your hair. Use freshly squeezed lemon juice instead of commercially prepared lemon juice for best results. Always do a strand test before applying the henna mixture onto your hair. Use the lemon juice mixture in moderation; the acid can be quite harsh on hair and may damage it.
  • Don't use the lemon juice and chamomile infusion for dark brown, black or red hair; these remedies will cause your hair to turn brassy or orange.

on 10/22/2009 You should leave a gigantic, huge warning about henna and the fact that if you use henna YOU WILL NEVER EVER BE ABLE TO DYE YOUR HAIR UNTIL THE HENNA GROWS OUT. Henna is absolutely permanent and NOTHING will get it out, not even bleach. Not to mention the fact that you cannot turn hair blonde with henna OR cassia. You HAVE to use bleach or a stripper. Henna is a deposit-only permanent dye, it can not lift color.

on 5/12/2009 Hi Kandice,This article is about turning your hair blonde WITHOUT dye so I'm not quite sure what your question is. If your hair has turned bright orange from dyeing your brown hair, I suggest applying a toner to neutralize the brassy tones. If you don't have much experience dyeing your hair, I suggest seeking advice from a professional hair stylist. By the way, it's extremely difficult to turn brown hair into blonde with just one try. Good luck!
