How to Measure a Kayak Paddle

Kayaking, both whitewater and recreational, is one of the fastest-growing sports today. Thousands of people have taken to the water in innovative gear and equipment. Boats and paddles vary according to the sport. Whitewater paddles are specifically designed for performance and ergonomics and recreational paddles are designed for paddling long distances. Sometimes, trial and error is the best method of determining the right paddle, coupled with some education and guidance. Basic guidelines also exist to help you make the best choice.

Instructions

  1. Measurements for Whitewater Paddles

    • 1

Verify your height in feet and inches.

    • 2

Use a 188 to 194 cm paddle if your height is under 5 feet, 2 inches.

    • 3

Get a 191 to 197 cm paddle if you are between 5 feet and 5 feet, 8 inches tall.

    • 4

Buy a 194 to 200 cm paddle if you are over 5 feet, 6 inches.

Measurements for Touring, Sea or Recreational Kayaks

    • 5

Measure the width of your kayak from edge to edge at the seat.

    • 6

Get a 220 cm paddle if your kayak is between 21 and 24 inches in width.

    • 7

Use a 225 to 230 cm paddle if your kayak is wider than 24 inches.

    • 8

Get the shortest paddle you can comfortably use.

    • 9

Buy a longer paddle if your seat is raised. If a seat is raised from the floor of the kayak, added paddle length needs to be twice the height of the seat. So, for example, you purchase a 210 cm paddle, then raise the seat of your kayak 1-inch off the floor of your boat, you may need to add two inches to your paddle length.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a retailer that offers demos on boat and paddles and, better yet, does demo days on the water. Take your kayak along, sit in your boat and try out different length paddles to find what works for you. As discussed above, sometimes trial and error is the best method. Some paddlers invest in an expensive paddle to begin with then upgrade as needed. There is a large secondhand market for paddling equipment, both on the internet and at local outdoor suppliers, so getting rid of unwanted equipment is rarely a problem.

  • Kayaking is a dangerous sport. Always wear a life vest.
