The next time you want to add new decorating touches to your home, invest some time in a stained glass project. When light shines through the different colored pieces of glass, colorful shadows will make your room come alive.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Colored glass pieces
  • Work board
  • Copper tape
  • Scissors
  • Soldering gun
  • Paintbrush
  • Flax
  • Rag or paper towel
  • Glass cleaner
  1. Step 1

Choose different colored and shaped pieces of glass and lay them out on the work board in a chosen design.

  2. Step 2

Remove the backing from the copper tape--without disconnecting it from the tape roll--and press its sticky side against the edge of a glass piece. Cut the tape to detach it from the roll after all sides of the glass are covered in foil, leaving approximately a little less than 1 inch extra to overlap with the foil where you started.

  3. Step 3

Pinch the foil that hangs over the edge on each side of the glass to make it stick to each side.

  4. Step 4

Choose two glass pieces to connect together. Brush some flax to the foil-covered edges of both pieces and place them next to each other so that the copper edges are touching.

  5. Step 5

Hold a solder piece in one hand and the soldering gun in the other. Press the tip of the gun against the end of the solder to melt it. The molten solder will form a small bead between the two glass pieces, gluing them together. Repeat this step as many times as necessary to fill the space between the two glass pieces. Flip the two connected pieces over and completely seal both sides.

  6. Step 6

Connect the other glass pieces to the first two and then leave the project to cool for approximately 20 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Wipe the surface of the glass on both sides with a paper towel or rag soaked in glass cleaner to remove any grime.

  8. Step 8

Lean the project against a window so that sunlight can shine through the colored glass.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from splattering solder. Always unplug the soldering gun before leaving the workstation--even if only for a minute.
