How to Write an Evaluation for a Music Performance
Simple adjectives such as "good" can be used in a music performance evaluation, but an effective evaluation uses much more than simple descriptions. An evaluation of a musical performance explains the strengths and weaknesses of a performance. It describes the music patterns and how well the performers blend their play. A person who writes evaluations for musical performances must have a good ear and be attentive to details of the performance.

1
Begin a music performance evaluation with the name or names of the musicians who gave the performance. The next item in the evaluation should be the name of the piece of music that was played, especially if only one title was played. If a number of pieces were played, some titles can be listed later when they're addressed in the evaluation.
-
2
Describe the overall performance of the music. Explain how the beat and melodies played were effective in creating an overall listening experience. Describe how the music affected your emotions.
-
-
3
Break the performance down into three parts: the beginning, middle and end. Describe each part of the performance. Sometimes a musical performance has a strong beginning, but because of fatigue, the players lose steam and aren't quite in harmony at the end. If you judge fatigue to be a factor, mention it in your evaluation.
-
4
Note the projection of the music and the presence of the musicians. These are important factors in a performance and should be part of the evaluation.
-
5
Evaluate the style of play of the musicians. Explain why the style impressed you or failed to do so.
-
6
Make any other comments on the performance that you feel should go into the evaluation, and then summarize in a final paragraph the main thrust of the evaluation.

Tips & Warnings
If the musical performance was in front of an audience and the audience reacted favorably to the performance, you can say this in your review, and explain why it agrees or differs from your opinion.
Reviews of a musical performance can vary greatly due to tastes in music.
