Fishermen often like to make their own bait because they can customize it to fit the lakes they frequent and work the way they want. Making your own worms will save you money because they are cheap to make and fishermen lose several lures each time they fish. Making your own fishing worm lures is easy and almost anyone can do it, whether just for fun or for profit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small pot
  • 1 oz. liquid plastic
  • Wooden spoon
  • Plastic coloring
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Worm mold
  • Large plastic container
  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • Lubricating lure oil
  • Plastic bags
  1. Step 1

In a small pot bring the flame to low heat. Place one ounce of liquid plastic in the pot and stir continuously with a wooden spoon. Allow the liquid to heat up but not boil. Add a couple drops of plastic coloring. Continue to stir so the color distributes evenly. Add more drops of coloring until the liquid plastic reaches the desired coloring. You can mix colors as well.

  2. Step 2

If you would like to add glitter to give your worms some glitter flakes, add a pinch of glitter to the pot and stir well. Remove the pot from heat. Set the worm mold on a flat surface. Carefully pour the liquid plastic solution into the molds. You may need to wipe the edges clean with a paper towel if it spills or runs over the mold edges.

  3. Step 3

Tap the mold against the flat surface ever so slightly. This will help bring any bubbles to the surface and flatten out the top of the liquid. Let sit for five minutes undisturbed. Fill the bottom of a large plastic container with an inch of cold water. With a steady hand so as not to spill the still hardening plastic, pick up the mold and set it in the plastic container.

  4. Step 4

Leave the mold in the cold water for ten minutes. The cold water helps the liquid plastic set correctly. Lay some paper towels out on a flat surface. Remove the mold from the water and bring the mold over the paper towels. Flip it over and gently push the worms out of the mold. They may need you to pull at the end to release them.

  5. Step 5

Take a bit of lubricating lure oil and coat the worms in it. Let the worms sit on the paper towel for five minutes while the oil absorbs slightly into the plastic and attaches itself. Place in plastic bags and store for fishing later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create a multi-colored worm by melting multiple colors at once in separate pots and pour into the mold at once.
  • Do not let the plastic bubble or boil--it will ruin it
