How to Make Knot Bracelets

Aside from their practical uses, knots can also be used in creating beautiful jewelry. A favorite among hippies and members of the Rastafarian movement, simplistic knot bracelets keep their appearance for years, even after being exposed to water and other elements on a daily basis. Durable enough to suit any lifestyle, knot bracelets do not require maintenance of any kind, making them an ideal jewelry choice for everyday wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a string of hemp or embroidery floss loosely around your wrist. Cut two pieces that are approximately five times longer than the one fitted around your wrist. Then cut another piece, about 4" longer than the previous two.

    • 2

Place the strings side by side and tie the ends on one side into a knot. Place a piece of scotch tape over the knot and press on it to hold it in place against a surface, for example, a desk.

    • 3

Pull on the loose ends of two shorter strings until they are taut and tape them in place further down on the desk. You will be wrapping the remaining string around these two base strings.

    • 4

Place the long string over the base strings. Then take it under the base strings and put it through the loop formed by the three strings. Pull on the long string until it forms a small knot at the top next to the tape.

    • 5

Repeat step 5 over and over to create a spiral of knots.

    • 6

Tie a double knot with the three strings once approximately 1.5" of loose string remains at the bottom.

    • 7

Remove scotch tape to release the bracelet. Wrap it around your wrist and tie the two ends together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using hemp will produce a thicker bracelet with more texture, while using embroidery floss will result in a thinner, more delicate piece. For a more ornate look, pass the two base strings through the hole of one or more beads. Continue knotting as you normally would once you have added the desired number of beads.
