How to Print an Image Larger Than the Screen View

In truth, there are only a few cases when you will want to print your image the same exact size as what you see on your screen. In most cases, your image shown on your screen view is sized down to fit the size of your window. Also, when you have an image set up in an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop, it is usually scaled down to be proportionate with your actual print size. So for example, you might want to print a large poster at 24 by 36 inches but your image will show as 12 by 18 inches on your screen. Still, you can print your scaled down image, without much or any distortion on a larger sheet of paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose "View Actual Size" (or similar) on your image editing software to see what the true size of the image is. You can also find this out by navigating to "Image Size" on your toolbar.

    • 2

Insert paper into your printer that will fit your desired output size for the image. Common paper sizes include 8 1/2 by 11inches, 8 1/2 by 14 inches, 11 by 17 inches, and 12 by 18 inches. Anything larger than 11 by 17 inches will require a wide format printer.

    • 3

Go to printer properties and select "Photo" or "Best" under the "Print Quality" section. This will assure that your sized-up image will be printed optimally at the highest resolution possible. Be sure to choose whether you want the image to print in full color, grayscale, or black and white.

Select the corresponding paper size to match the type of paper you inserted in the printer under your printer paper options. There is usually a choice to either "fit the image to page," "scale to fit," or "print actual size" so that the image will fill the entire page. Most printers also have an option for you to change the paper size and resize the printed image based on a percentage. All of these options can be found under printer properties. Set the percentage based on how large you want your image to output on the page and then select "Print."

Tips & Warnings

  • You will have a white border around the image if you print on a regular inkjet or laser printer. If you want to eliminate the border, you will either have to cut the image out of the paper with an X-acto knife or use a wide format printer that gives you the option to eliminate borders.
