How to Write a Performance Evaluation for a Fellow Employee
Many companies have adopted peer evaluations of performance during the annual review period. In these situations, employees rate the performances of fellow employees and write reviews for their managers. The managers have the authority to add comments to the review. This process is seen as helping employees to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of their fellow employees. Writing a performance evaluation can be stressful, but learning how to do it well can improve your job security.

1
Write down the main projects your fellow employee worked on during the year. Depending on the employee’s job, you could write down the accounts the employee was responsible for, the deadlines the employee was supposed to meet and goals the employee was expected to achieve.
-
2
List the employee’s accomplishments in relation to the projects and goals. Accentuate the positive aspects of the employee’s performance, but be realistic.
-
-
3
List specific examples of things your fellow employee did during the year. The best performance reviews cite specific performance examples that reflect well on the company’s profitability. This could be reflected in increased sales and things such as reduced warranty costs and an increased perception of quality.
-
4
Create a rough draft of the performance review. Get to your points quickly when writing the draft. Back up the points by indicating the listed specific examples.
-
5
Set the draft aside for a few days. Print out the review and read it carefully. Use a pen to make notes for any grammar errors and add ideas you have to improve the review. Often when a review is allowed to sit for a few days, you can think of more ideas to add about specific performance examples that happened during the year.
-
6
Incorporate the edits and notes into your review and submit it to human resources or your manager.

Tips & Warnings
Maintain a list of goals that you update with notes during the year so you can refer to it at evaluation time.
Comments that are overly negative and don't reflect directly on performance can reflect badly on you because it will appear you were unable to deal with the situation on your own.
