A car audio installer is knowledgeable about all car audio systems, including CD players, head units, speakers, CD changers and other audio components. They also know how to build custom speaker enclosures, and install keyless entry and car alarm systems. If you want to learn how to become a car audio installer, follow the steps below to see if you have what it takes to do these things every day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch DVDs and videos on simple and complex installations. These videos are made by professionals and go into great detail on exactly what to do and what materials and tools to use on the job.

  2. Step 2

Practice on your own vehicle, as well as vehicles from family and friends. Take pictures of each installation that you complete. These pictures can be put into a small album and become your portfolio or resume when applying for a job. This proves you do have installation experience.

  3. Step 3

Attend a mobile electronics school to learn all of the latest installation techniques. These schools generally last a few weeks and can teach you a lot if you are new to installing.

  4. Step 4

Get certified with the Mobile Electronics Certification Program (MECP) test. You can take these tests at testing sites or at your local library (with permission). This certification will show shop owners that you do have the knowledge to be a car audio installer.

  5. Step 5

Apply for car audio installer positions at individually owned automotive shops or large chain store electronic stores. Both types of stores can give you good experience while being paid to be an installer.
