How to Make an International Call From Canada
Making international calls from Canada is a simple matter if you know the correct format and have the required codes. There are two ways to make an international call from Canada; the one you use depends on where you are calling. Canada, the United States and 17 other countries are members of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) and use the same numbering and area code system. For other countries, you have to use an access code and country code to place an international call.

1
Call any country within the North American Numbering Plan by dialing 1 plus the area code and phone number, just as you would for a long distance call in Canada. Countries that participate in the NANP include Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Grenada along with U.S. Pacific territories, such as American Samoa and Guam. (For a complete list of NANP countries, see Resources below.)
-
2
Find the country code for any country outside the NANP. A country code tells the phone system which nation you are dialing. For example, England's country code is 44, Japan's is 81 and Mexico's is 52. You can look up other country codes and related calling information at several online sites, including HowToCallAbroad.com (See Resources below.).

3
Learn how the country you are calling organizes its telephone numbering system. In some countries, such as Germany and Britain, area codes vary in length (large cities usually have shorter area codes). Phone numbers vary in length as well. Also, in some countries you must dial a specific digit to make a call to a cell phone.

Make an international call from Canada by first dialing the code for international access (011) plus the country code, and then the area code and phone number. For example, to call London, England, you would dial 011 + 44 + 20 + the local number. Be sure to add the appropriate digit before the area code if it's required to dial a cell phone number.

Tips & Warnings
Check the time difference in the country you are calling. Calling at off-peak hours or on weekends can save money, but you probably don't want to place a call from Vancouver to London at 7 p.m. Vancouver time, because it will be 3 a.m. in London. Compare prices for making international calls, as they can vary widely. You may be able to get a discount rate from some providers.
