Child Applying Homemade Lotion to Eczema

Children's skin can be sensitive and can allergically react to the chemical additives found in commercial lotions and creams. To avoid these reactions, parents can make lotion for kids right in their own kitchen using basic ingredients. Homemade lotion is extremely moisturizing and gentle on the skin. It can help heal skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis, and can prevent diaper rash when used on infants. Here is an easy-to-use recipe for creating your own homemade lotion for kids.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 oz. of beeswax pellets
  • 1 oz. of olive oil
  • 1 oz. of aloe vera gel
  • 1/2 oz. of distilled water
  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil
  • Blender
  • Double boiler
  • Empty coffee can
  • Small pot
  • 2 candy thermometers
  • Jar with a lid
  • Rubber spatula

Instructions

    • 1

Place 2 oz. of beeswax pellets into an empty coffee can. Place the coffee can into the top portion of a double boiler. Fill the bottom portion of a double boiler half full of water. Place the top of the double boiler into the bottom. Heat over medium heat to melt the beeswax slowly. Place a candy thermometer into the wax to gauge the temperature.

    • 2

Pour 1 oz. of olive oil into a small pot, and heat it over medium heat. Do not boil. Once the beeswax is melted, take note of the temperature. Place a second candy thermometer into the olive oil, and continue heating until the temperatures are the same. Remove both the wax and the oil from the heat.

    • 3

Pour both the wax and the oil into a blender. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the edges of the pot and coffee can to get all of the wax and oil into the blender. Pour in 1 oz. of aloe vera gel, 1/2 oz. of distilled water and 10 drops of lavender essential oil. Blend for 5 to 7 minutes.

    • 4

Pour the lotion into a glass jar. Let the lotion cool completely. Place a lid onto the jar for storage, and place in the refrigerator. Since the homemade lotion does not have chemical preservatives, it must be refrigerated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use lotion on children's rashes, dry skin and to moisturize after bath time.

  • Keep hot wax and oil away from children.
