How to Fix a Cracked Car Top Carrier

A car top carrier is a great accessory for large and small cars. In some cases they can add 50 percent more cargo space in a convenient, out-of-the-way case. They are perfect for trips and other everyday uses. But when these car top carriers break or crack it can really be a problem. Water can get inside and ruin items. It will also pool inside the carrier. If you can find a replacement for that part of the car top carrier, use it because this is the most effective way to fix a broken one. If not, follow these steps.

Things You'll Need

• Fiberglass
• Resin
• Tape
• Sander
• Paint

Instructions

1. Using your hands, press the cracked ends together so they do not overlap and the surface is flush and flat.

2. On the inside of the car top carrier, rough up the area surrounding the crack with 120 grit sand paper. You may want to mask this area off with tape first.

3. Mix up a batch of fiberglass resin inside of a small container. Make about 3 ounces for every inch of crack you want to repair.

4. Remove any tape masking the area if any was applied. Dip a strand of fiberglass into the resin and then apply this fiberglass strip over the crack. Spread more resin on the corner of the strip (where you held on to it) and around the edges.

5. Repeat step 5 until the entire crack is covered with fiberglass then let dry. This will repair the crack and prevent water from getting into your car top carrier.
