How to Operate a Power Trowel

There are two kinds of power trowels: one you can ride on while the other you push. Its main function is to give a shine or gloss to cement by adding friction between the blades and the cement. The push power trowel is simpler and less expensive. The information below shows how to operate a push or stand-behind power trowel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power trowel's oil level. There is a knob on the metal area on the back side of the machine closer to the handle. Unscrew the knob to get to the dipstick. Check to see that it has the proper amount of oil in it before starting and using. Place the machine on the area of the concrete that you will be working on.

    • 2

Look at the handle of the power trowel machine. On the right side of the handle there is a throttle that will need to be placed in the one-third position. There is an engine cut-off switch on the lower left. The cut-off switch will need to be placed in the on position.

    • 3

Stand behind the power trowel. Start the engine. Turn the throttle clockwise to start the spinning of the blades. Adjust the tilt knob that is located in front of the handle to maneuver the height and angle of the blades.

    • 4

Turn the handle to the right for it to move forward and turn it to the left to move the machine backward. Be sure to keep a good hold on the power trowel's handle to guide it correctly over the concrete.

    • 5

Push the handle up and down. To guide the power trowel toward the right push the handle down. To guide the machine toward the left, pull up on the handle.

    • 6

Place the throttle back to its original position, which would be the lowest notch once you are done using the machine. Put the cut-off switch to the off position and turn off the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never leave the power trowel on and unattended.
