Initial markings
Pick the wall you'll be putting your shelves on. Pick two spots out on the floor, 6 to 7 feet apart, and measure up from the floor, making marks on the wall, separated by the following distances: 24 inches, 18 inches, 12 inches, 12 inches and 12 inches. Then draw a line connecting the marks so you have five lines parallel to the floor. Check that the lines are even, using your level.

Take your stud finder and locate the studs along each line. Make a pencil mark for each stud on each line.

Shelf bracket
Mount 10-inch shelf brackets into the wall with wood screws on the marks for the studs. Use your drill to make a small pilot hole for each bracket so the wood screws go in easily.

Lay your 1-by-10 inch pine boards across the shelf brackets and secure them onto the brackets using wood screws. Put your materials on the shelves.
