Step 1
Removing Dyson filtersRemove the double filter from the Dyson. If you are facing the machine, this is located on the right side of the base of the machine. Push the clip to release the filter. These filters need to be cleaned every six months, but in some homes (such as in the case of multiple pets), they should be cleaned more frequently. If these filters become congested with fine dust particles, it could greatly reduce the amount of suction the vacuum has.

Step 2
Dyson's two filtersSeparate the two pieces after removing the double filter. Clean both pieces by running under cool water until the water runs clear. Do not use a scrub brush or any sort of soap or cleanser, as these could shorten the life and affect the performance of the filters. Once the water runs clear, and the filters are both clean, lay them in a warm and sunny place (such as a window sill), until they are completely dry. This takes at least 12 hours.

Step 3
Check the uptake clean-out on the left side of the machine if your Dyson still isn't functioning properly after cleaning the filters. Push the tab to release the piece. After removal, inspect the piece itself, as well as the cavity of the machine. Often, debris will get trapped in here but it's usually simple to remove. Make sure the machine is unplugged, and use a finger or the handle of a wooden spoon to dislodge any blockages.

Step 4
Find and fix blockages on the back of the machine. Push on the tab that removes the elbow joint from the machine. Slide this piece off. Many times, items such as Legos, marbles, or other items become trapped in this area. Dump these out and reattach the elbow joint.
