Overcome Depression in Islam

Like everyone else, Muslims experience depression. The Qur'an and Islamic Hadith offers prescriptions for the treatment of depression in Muslims. Enriching one's Islamic faith, admitting responsibility for harming others, and acknowledging reality are primary ways that Muslims are encouraged to find help with the difficulties of depression. Essentially, Islamic recommendations for depression derive from the Qur'an.

Instructions

  1. Overcoming Depression in Islam

    • 1

Resist anxieties and find ways to reduce worries. Express patience for those things over which one has no control. Strength of will and faith in a greater reward offers benefits that help one to endure difficulties. These are recommendations of Islamic Hadith (the words and deeds of the Prophet (PBUH). For example, Hadith #38 offers comfort that "No doubt verily the [closer servants of Allah] no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve." (See Additional Resources)

    • 2

Recognize that troubles often help to cleanse one's misdeeds. The Prophet (BPUH) Muhammad teaches that "When Allah wishes good for His slave, He hastens to bring about his punishment in this world, and if He does not wish good for him." (See Resources, Islam's Treatment for Anxiety and Worry)

    • 3

Accept that the world is a difficult place with severe problems. When one understands that this is a weary world, one anticipates the hope of Paradise, where all troubles are eased and joy is everywhere. Hadith 13 offers insight for the Muslim who may be struggling: the believer "never sees this world as his home, but as a temporary dwelling full of trials until he reaches his final home of Jannah." Liberation and joy are the rewards of Paradise.

    • 4

Turn to natural remedies for depression. Islam recognizes the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise for physical and spiritual wellness. Additionally, vitamins and herbs are allowed. One may use St. John's Wort or increase B vitamins and/or myrrh to aid one's difficulties.

Tips & Warnings

  • Muslims are urged to find an Muslim physician or counselor to help find a path that is supported by Islamic teachings.

Psychospiritually, it is possible to cure depression instantly by activating the awareness part of consciousness. If your depression is caused by thinking/analysing, you need to realise that for you your consciousness is awareness as well as thinking. Thinking can be categorised into three sub-sections, thinking about the past, "present" and future. To stop the depression, stop thinking about the past/future via actively concentrating on the present moment. Once you are in the present moment the trick is to just observe your emotions that you are feeling, without thinking, this will activate the awareness part of consciousness. Next focus your energy in the present moment away from your body onto your surroundings atmosphere/environment. Now all you have to do is maintain this feeling of awareness, best done by moving around/keeping busy. In this state of awareness it is beneficial...
