Instructions

    • 1

Go to the PBS kids, Sesame Street website or click on the link provided in the resource section. There are many print-outs available. Choose some pages with characters you would like to use on your birthday cake and print them out.

    • 2

Create a stencil from the print-outs. Take a straight edge knife blade and trace around the character first. Punch out the character, being careful not to rip it. Cut out features such as facial features, bow ties and polka dots. This will create a stencil for when you ice your birthday cake.

    • 3

Bake the birthday cake and allow it to cool completely. Ice the entire cake with a spatula. Vanilla or a light colored icing is the best choice; it allows the Sesame Street characters to stand out more.

    • 4

Figure out an arrangement before you place the stencils on the cake. Once you are ready, gently lay the stencils down on top of the cake. The icing should cause the stencils to stay in place.

    • 5

In a mixing bowl, mix a small amount of vanilla icing and food coloring. If the character is Elmo, mix vanilla icing and red food coloring. Mix the colors you will need to fill in all the characters.

    • 6

Fill an icing bag with the colored icing. Apply the tip to the bag and trace around one of the Sesame Street characters. Do this with each character. Fill in the features and the bodies of the characters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Match the icing color to the character body color when you trace it with the icing. Use a small tip for detail work.
