Nothing is more exasperating for an angler than to lose a fish because a knot came undone on his line, allowing a big one to swim away after a hard fight. Knowing how to tie a lure, a swivel or a hook onto your fishing line, using what is known as a clinch knot, will keep such a thing from happening to you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Thread the end of your fishing line through the eye of whatever you are attaching to it, whether it's a fishing lure, a swivel or a hook to hold live bait.

  2. Step 2

Pull the line through so that you have a few inches to work with, and then wrap it around the line going into the eye five times. Make certain that you do this in a concise manner so the loops are not loose or overlapping each other.

  3. Step 3

Thread the end of the fishing line back through the first loop that is next to the eye. Don't thread it through the eye, but do thread it through the loop where the eye attaches to the line. Pull the line through gently.

  4. Step 4

Push the line through the loop that this has created. Keeping your fingers on the knot, pull this line taut, but be sure to run the five loops down the line towards the line as you do.

  5. Step 5

Cut the end of the line close to the knot. This completes your clinch knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • This knot is best used on monofilament line up to 20 pound test in strength.
