- Old toothbrush

Empty the water out of the fountain reservoir.

Pull the pump out of the fountain--disconnecting tubing if necessary to do so--and wipe it clean with a dry cloth. Remove any residue or build-up from the pump with the cloth.

Remove the pump cover and wipe down the interior of the pump too. Don't take its components apart. Clean any hard to reach components with an old toothbrush.

Pick any large chunks of debris out of the pump reservoir by hand.

Brush the fountain reservoir surface with a clean, stiff nylon brush. Follow with a clean cloth to remove any small, lingering bits of debris.

Use a minimal amount of bleach, if necessary, to remove any algae present in the fountain reservoir.
