Make beautiful mosaic stepping stones for your garden easily with a few supplies you can find at your local craft store. Custom-design your stepping stone with your children's handprints, brightly colored pebbles or bits of broken ceramic tiles. Form the stepping stones and let your children enjoy decorating them with you.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stepping-stone molds
  • Universal mold release
  • Stepping-stone concrete
  • Bucket
  • Mixing stick
  • Trowel
  • Mosaic ceramic tiles
  1. Step 1

Apply the mold release to the inside surface of your stepping-stone mold. Mix the concrete according the manufacturer's directions and either pour it or use a trowel to place it in the mold. Fill the mold almost to the top.

  2. Step 2

Vibrate the mold with your hands to release any air bubbles that may be in the concrete. Let the concrete set up for about five minutes before you begin to create your mosaic.

  3. Step 3

Press the ceramic tiles into the surface of the concrete in whatever pattern you enjoy. Fill the top of the concrete with the tiles. If you plan to make a handprint or scribble anything into the stone, wait for about 15 minutes after pouring the concrete to write your message. Wash your child's hand immediately after making the print, as concrete will burn the skin. As long as the concrete is soft, you can add tiles to the surface of the stone. Some concrete mixes take longer to set up than others, so you should read the directions on the mix about the dry time.

  4. Step 4

Allow the concrete to dry and carefully flip the stone over to remove it from the mold. The release agent makes removing the plastic mold from the concrete stone easy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add concrete dye to the concrete mix before pouring it into the mold if you would like a more colorful stepping stone.
  • Wear protective clothing when working with concrete, and do not let it dry on your skin. Wash any concrete from your skin immediately after contact.
