How to Make a Cover for a Photo Book

One day, possibly 20 years into the futre, your simple little photo book could fall into the hands of your children or grandchildren. They will most likely look through your photos with admiration and excitement in their eyes, amazed that Grandma used to look like that. So why not go the extra mile and put the plastic pocket in front of your photo book to use? Design a quick and easy cover to grab the viewers' attention and prepare them for the beautiful photos that they are about to see inside. You can use this cover as the front of a full-color professionally bound photography book.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the photo book to determine the size that the cover should be. Most photo books are sized at 8.5 by 11 or nine by seven inches.

    • 2

Open a blank document in Microsoft Word and size it to fit your book (you can also use Adobe Photoshop if you want more graphical options).

    • 3

Create an image box the size of your entire page. Decide on the background color for the photo book cover and fill the box with that cover--in Microsoft Word, right click the box and select "Format Autoshape" and in Photoshop click "Edit> Fill."

    • 4

Decide on a name for the photo book (i.e. "Graduation Photos") and type the name into a text box in your blank file. You can reposition the name text to sit at the top, bottom or middle of the page according to your preferences. Type in your name at the very bottom or very top of the cover in a smaller font size if you'd like.

    • 5

Pick the best photo out of all of the pictures that will be in your photo book (you can also choose several if you'd like). Place the photo in the center of your workspace, either on top of or below your title. If you have multiple photos, you can either place them all one on top of the other, or scatter them around the page randomly. Just make sure that the photo book title is clearly displayed on the cover.

Print the cover on bright white printer paper or photo quality self-adhesive printer paper (example below under "Resources"). Decide if you want a border around the cover or not. If you don't want the border, you can use an Xacto knife and ruler to trim off the white border after printing.
