How to Make a Folding Hand Fan for a Doll

1
Take a circular stencil or lid and trace on to a piece of card stock.
-
2
Draw a line straight down the middle of the circle with a ruler and pencil.

3
Cut the circle in half. Set one half aside. Draw a line down the center with the pencil pressed against the ruler. Divide each half in half and repeat the process to make even-sized quarters. It is important that each segment be equal. Divide each segment in half once more. You now have eight triangles.
-
4
Turn this half-circle piece over. Choose a stamped image that goes with the theme your doll is dressed for. Stamp the image on the half-circle shape. Use embossing powder to raise the image or color it in with ink markers. Let dry thoroughly.

5
Use a paper cutter to cut straight down the lines on the back of the half circle. Place each segment face-up on the work surface as you cut them off. Keep the segments in order with the far right-hand side on the bottom. The segments will look like pointed triangles. Trim 1/8- to 1/4-inch off of the pointed end to flatten the edge.
-
6
Stack the segments in a perfectly aligned bundle. Paper punch or poke a hole 1/4- to 1/2 inch from the bottom of the segments. You may have to do one segment at a time. It is very important that the holes be exactly in the same place on each one.

Push the brad end through the holes to the back of the fan. Bend the legs and flatten them. Test to make sure the fan can open and close.

Make sure the holes are aligned in the pieces or the fan will not open and close smoothly.
