How to Give a Wedding Shower

Wedding, or bridal, showers are an important traditional part of the wedding process. It's a time for friends and family members of the bride and groom to come together and shower the bride with love, gifts for her new home and advice on how to have a successful marriage. It's a much needed day that makes her feel like a princess and relieves some of the stress from all the wedding planning chaos. The maid of honor normally throws the shower and begins planning it a couple months before to ensure everything is perfect and that it is a day the bride will never forget.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to the bride, her mother and the mother of the groom to get their guest lists for who they would like to be invited. Traditionally showers are for women only, but co-ed showers are becoming more popular. Ask the bride how she feels about this; if you're thinking of throwing an alternative shower, you want her to be comfortable.

Select a date that is 1 to 3 months before the wedding. Weekends generally work better for most people, especially when you have several individuals involved. Choose a location; your home or the home of one of the mothers is traditional, but you can have it anywhere. Take time of day and the season into account so the weather will be comfortable for everyone if you have anything going on outside.

    • 3

Choose a theme. There are tons of themes: color patterns, lingerie and lace, kitchen utensils, cooking and recipes and more. Make or buy invitations that fit the theme. Ask guests to RSVP and specify a date so you can have some kind of idea of how many people to expect.

    • 4

Decide what food you will be serving and plan the catering. Decide what games will be played that everyone will enjoy (see Resources). Make all the arrangements necessary for these games. Buy or make prizes for the winners of each game. Bath and body gift sets, gift cards and movies make great prizes.

    • 5

Decorate the place as far ahead of time as possible so you will have less to do the day of the party. Be sure to set up an area for gifts as well as to have plenty of seating for everyone so no one will be on the floor or in an uncomfortable situation. Cook the food and get ready for your guests to arrive. Put on a smile and be prepared to entertain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create a theme and make it obvious on the invitation so guests will participate in the theme. Be prepared for a few extra people as some bring others with them or simply don't RSVP

  • Don't wait until the last minute. You need to send out invitations early and get prepared for the party to make it come off well
